The researchers found that the low-temperature stability and flame retardancy of melamine sponge make it suitable for work with higher technical requirements, which is used to insulate steel tanks filled with liquid natural gas at a temperature of about - 160 ℃. Other applications include thermal insulation of hot water tanks, boilers and their equipment. Through mechanical cutting, melamine sponge can be processed into insulation material for pipeline protection.

Case study: liquefied natural gas is usually transported by pipeline from storage to consumers, with a transportation distance of up to 2500 km. If the transportation distance is long, it is usually more economical to liquefy the gas and use it for transportation. Since LNG is stored at extremely low temperatures, it must be transported in effectively insulated containers. Natural steam pipe, methanol and other insulating materials are processed by special shape, thin aluminum and non-woven fabric to form a new industrial thermal insulation material.

For this reason, this combination of features that can insulate LNG tanks has many advantages: compared with conventional sponges that are fragile at the same low temperature, this high elasticity and insulation sponge is not affected by low temperature, and melamine insulation sponge can also be combined with other materials to make it insulating and free from the influence of low temperature liquid pressure.
